Bistro Le Coq

My wife and I took a journey to Bistro Le Coq for an anniversary lunch earlier this week.  Having thoroughly enjoyed our honeymoon in Paris we thought we'd extend the memories as it were.

Halifax patios are known to us as places serving side orders of diesel fumes, panhandlers and Harley's in a hurry so we opted for inside.  The decor is great from the 40's French music right on up to the shiny tin ceilings.

Philip was Gallic in appearance and Nova Scotian in his approach.  A winning combination.  His champaign cocktail recommendations were right on the money. 

While few in number the escargot were well presented and obviously not from a can.  Just to say she's tried them, two went to the far side of the table.  What a trouper.  Philip was attentive but unobtrusive as he quietly conceded the dish was low on garlic due to comments from the locals.  Cowards! I say.

My table mate enjoyed her croque monsieur but wondered what a few extra minutes and some salt would have done for her cauliflower gratiner.  I thought they were both really good salt or no salt.

My steak sandwich was killer.  The rye bread stood up to the bold flavours and the fried egg yolk made for a wonderfully rich sauce.  Oh and the steak was perfectly cooked through and well seasoned.  As for the frittes... She likes them not so crisp so she was happy.  As for me, I used them to devour the house-made(?) mayo.  That's right kids... No ketchup or salt on this Euro table.

With neither a chain smoking old lady passing crepes through a sidewalk-facing window nor a hustling Tunisian waiter this is no Parisian bistro but it is a wonderful French experience and the food is definitely worth the trip.  Philip and the tin ceiling were just icing on the gateau.
